The Triad is a wonderful place to live, with great people, great food and many spectacular locations to visit from national parks like the Pisgah National Forest to local gems like Lake Lure and Tweetsie Railroad. If you’re looking for a few things to do in the triad, there are plenty of fun and interesting activities that are only a stone’s throw away. Here are a few locations that make great day trips for anyone in the Triad region.

Outdoor Activities

For those among us that love being outdoors, there’s a wealth of outdoor opportunities to be found near the Triad.  Whether you’re looking for new golf courses, exploring one of North Carolina’s many small towns, spending a day mountain biking, rock climbing, and hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains, learning something new at the North Carolina Zoo, North Carolina has something for every kind of outdoorsy explorer.

Old Salem

A hot dinner on the back porch at Salem Tavern? The scent of warm Moravian sugar cakes lingering around a cozy bakery? Cobblestone streets lit with the glow of lanterns and old-world charm? Old Salem is lovely any day of the year, but there’s really something special about this historical site in downtown Winston-Salem around the holidays. Autumn leaves and the Salem College campus offer the perfect backdrop to holiday festivities and traditional candle tea ceremonies, love feasts, and shopping around the charming stores along Main Street.

Reynolda House Museum and Gardens

Whether strolling through a blooming greenhouse, running through winding wooded trails, or simply lounging under a gazebo in the garden is more your speed, Reynolda Gardens is a great place to explore for daytrippers of all sorts. For those who would prefer meandering through a museum, shopping around local boutiques, or even having a spa day, Reynolda has you covered. Spend a couple of hours at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, watch Wake Forest University students play frisbee on the lawn across from the museum while you grab a bite to eat, and then treat yourself to a spa day or shopping trip in Reynolda Village. Reynolda is just a straight shot and short trip up the road from downtown Winston-Salem’s Broad Street, so it’s as easy to find as it is to fall in love with.


If you’re looking for a little challenge to your outdoor activities, Skywild in Greensboro NC, could be just the place you’re looking for. Skywild, an affiliate of the Greensboro Science Center, seeks to provide an ‘animal’ experience for its patrons, allowing you to experience a range of motions and activities outside of your everyday experience. Swing and soar through the trees just like the monkeys and lemurs you’ll see at the Greensboro Natural Science Center. If you’re new to climbing experiences, the Skywild ropes course provides a safe, exciting outdoor adventure for adventurers of all ages. Pilot Mountain State Park

Pilot mountain is a well-known landmark in the Triad region. Used for centuries as a navigational landmark, it now doubles as a recreational location for outdoor enthusiasts. Pilot Mountain offers miles of hiking trails, camping, climbing and spectacular scenery. Boasting a number of trails of all varying difficulties and lengths, you’ll find families and friends hiking all over Pilot Mountain. Pilot Mountain is a great place for first-time hikers or seasoned veterans to enjoy views of this beautiful state. This is a highly recommended location for anyone who enjoys the wild outdoors.

For anyone who likes to keep their activities indoors, The Triad area has a number of great locations for those of us who prefer our entertainment in a more controlled environment. Aside from the usual restaurants and movie theaters, there are a few unique locations you might want to try out.

If you’re a lover of culture and art, Ambleside Gallery in Greensboro is a choice destination for you. This local gem is well known and loved for its artistic charm and the unique artwork it keeps on display. Do yourself a favor and check out the works of collection Ambleside’s of art created by the many talented artists it hosts. You may find that ‘must have’ piece that you can’t live without, and even if you don’t, it’s an absolutely worthwhile the experience for all lovers of art.

Fair warning to you chocolate enthusiasts (really, who isn’t?), this place can be a wallet killer for those with a serious sweet tooth, so do plan accordingly.
